Acrophobia - An abnormal fear of high places.

Agitation - A unpleasant state of extreme arousal, increased tension, and irritability. Can be caused by anxiety.

Agoraphobia - Fear of being in places or situations from which escape may be difficult or embarrassing or in which help may not be available in the event of a panic attack.

Alprazolam - (Xanax) A medication, member of the benzodiazepine family, used to treat anxiety and panic disorder.

Altophobia - (Also Batophobia, Hypsiphobia) Fear of heights.

Amygdala - A small almond-shaped structure in the brain which plays a role in emotions and fear control.

Anticholinergic - A group of common side effects of the older group of antidepressants, including dry mouth, constipation, difficulty urinating and blurry vision.

Anticiptory Anxiety - The fear of having an anxiety attack, which is often a trigger by itself; "fear of fear".

Antidepressant - A medication used to treat depression, or to elevate mood. Types of antidepressants include tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI).

Antisocial PD (ASPD) - A personality disorder characterized by a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others.

Anxiety - A state of apprehension, uncertainty, and fear resulting from the anticipation of a realistic or fantasized threatening event or situation, often impairing physical and psychological functioning.

Anxiolytics - Anti-anxiety medicines.

Apiphobia - (Also Melissophobia) Fear of bees. Fear of wasps is Spheksophobia.

Arachnophobia - Fear of spiders.

Ativan - (see Lorazepam).

Automatic Thoughts - The thoughts (beliefs) about the day-to-day activities of our lives that can occur so quickly, almost without our conscious notice. In cognitive therapy, negative automatic thoughts are eliminated as much as possible.

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) - The nervous system responsible for regulating automatic bodily processes, such as breathing, heart rate, intestinal, urinary, and sexual functions. ANS is controlled by the hypothalamus.

Autophobia - Irrational fear of being alone or of oneself.

Aviophobia - (Also Pteromerhanophobia). Fear of flying.

Avoidant Personality Disorder - A severe form of social fear, characterized by avoidance of social interaction (overlaps Social Anxiety Disorder).

Beta blockers - A class of drugs that block beta-adrenergic substances, and consequently relieve stress on the heart.

Bipolar Disorder - A psychiatric disorder marked by alternating episodes of mania and depression.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) - A personality disorder in which there is a marked tendency to act impulsively without consideration of the consequences, together with affective instability. The ability to plan ahead may be minimal, and outbursts of intense anger may often lead to violence or "behavioural explosions"; these are easily precipitated when impulsive acts are criticized or thwarted by others. Two variants of this personality disorder are specified, and both share this general theme of impulsiveness and lack of self-control.

Buproprion - (Wellbutrin). An antidepressant, also useful for smoking cessation, social phobia, and attention deficit disorder.

Buspirone - (Buspar). An anti-anxiety drug. Prescribed mostly for GAD.

Caffeine - Caffeine is widely consumed substance that exists naturally in plants. It can also be produced synthetically and used as an additive in certain food products. It is a central nervous system stimulant and a diuretic. It is found in coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa and many carbonated beverages such as colas. Excessive caffeine intake can lead to anxiety and depression.

Catagelophobia - Fear of being ridiculed (Also see Social Phobia).

CBT - Cognitive-behavioral therapy.

CCBT - (abbr.) Comprehensive CBT.

Claustrophobia - Fear of confined spaces.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - A form of psychological therapy that focuses on directly modifying both cognitive processes and behavior. CBT draws heavily on cognitive theory and research, as well as more traditional techniques of behavior modification.

Comorbidity - The presence of co-existing diseases.

Cushing's syndrome - A condition in which the adrenal cortex overproduces cortisol. May cause anxiety.

Dementia - Partial or total loss of personality and other significant mental functions, due to mental deterioration, but without psychosis.

Depression - (Clinical) A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death.

Dissociative Disorder - A syndrome in which an individual experiences a disruption in memory, consciousness, and/or identity.

Doraphobia - Fear of fur or skins of animals.

DSM - (abbr.) The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a guideline that the American Psychiatric Association publishes.

Dyslexia - Learning disability also known as specific reading disability or reading disability. The disorder is characterized by impaired word recognition or decoding skills and reading comprehension difficulties.

Dysphoria - An emotional state characterized by anxiety, depression, or unease.

ECT - (Electroconvulsive Therapy). Therapy used in the treatment of severe depression. ECT involves placing electrodes on the temples, on one or both sides of the patient's head, and delivering a small electrical current. This aims to shock the brain and to restore its natural chemical balance.

Environmental stressors - Stressors caused by environment (e.g., work, school, relationships, noise, climatic extremes).

Ereuthrophobia - Fear of blushing.

ERP - Exposure Response Prevention. A type of behavioral therapy.

Fear - A direct, focused response to a specific event or object that an individual is consciously aware of it.

Felinophobia - (Also Ailurophobia, Elurophobia, Galeophobia, Gatophobia) Fear of cats.

Fluoxetine - (Prozac) A drug from the SSRI class.

Fugue - An episode during which an individual leaves his/her usual surroundings unexpectedly and forgets essential details about himself/herself and his/her lives.

GABA - Gamma-AminoButyric Acid - A neurotransmitter that seems to involve anxiety.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder - (GAD) pathological anxiety, which is excessive, chronic, and typically interferes with the ability to function in normal daily activities.

Half-life - The amount of time it takes for half of a drug concentration to be eliminated from the body. Withdrawal reactions associated with drugs with a longer half-life are more gradual and may be less severe.

Heterophobia - Fear of the opposite sex.

Hyperthyroidism - A condition caused by increased production of Thyroxin, causing depression, panic and anxiety.

ICD - World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases.

Identity Crisis - Chaotic concept of self wherein one's role in life appears to be an insoluble dilemma often expressed by isolation, withdrawal, rebellion and extremism.

In Vivo Exposure - In behavioral therapy, real exposure to the feared object or stimulus (unlike imaginal exposure).

Locus Ceruleus - Nerve cluster that lies near the brain's fourth ventricle, where Norepinephrine is concentrated.

Mania - A state characterized by an unusually high mood, irritability, overactivity, excessive talkativeness, racing thoughts, inflated ideas of self and financial extravagance.

Manic-Depressive - A person who has bipolar disorder.

MAOI - (abbr.) Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors. A class of drugs seldom prescribed for depression and anxiety.

Megalomania - A paranoid delusion of grandeur in which an individual believes that he or she is an important person or is carrying out great plans. The Megalomaniac has fantasies of magical control over things and activities in the environment (see Narcissistic Personality Disorder).

Mental Disorder - Any of various conditions characterized by impairment of an individual's normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, and caused by social, psychological, biochemical, genetic, or other factors, such as infection or head trauma.

Mirtazapine - An antidepressant (Remeron).

Mitral valve prolapse - A ballooning of the support structures of the mitral heart valve into the left upper collection chamber of the heart. Symptoms may include anxiety.

Munchausen Syndrom - An aberrant condition involving fabrication of an illness to attract medical attention. Sufferers seek numerous medical consultations with different doctors.

Myctophobia - (Also Nyctophobia) Fear of the dark.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) - An all-pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behaviour), need for admiration or adulation and lack of empathy, usually beginning by early adulthood and present in various contexts.

Neurotransmitter - A chemical agent released by the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) that transmits signals and causes physiological effects (e.g. Serotonin).

NLP - Neuro-Linguistic Programming. A set of therapeutic techniques some believe can cure phobias, among other things.

Obsession - An unpleasant or nonsensical thought which intrudes into a person's mind, despite a degree of resistance by the person who recognizes the thought as pointless or senseless, but nevertheless a product of their own mind. Obsessions may be accompanied by compulsive behaviors which serve to reduce the associated anxiety.

OCD - Obsessive-compulsive disorder, one of the anxiety disorders, is a potentially disabling condition that can persist throughout a person's life. The individual who suffers from OCD becomes trapped in a pattern of repetitive thoughts and behaviors that are senseless and distressing but extremely difficult to overcome.

Ophidiophobia - (Also Snakephobia) Fear of snakes.

Ornithophobia - Fear of birds.

out of the blue panic attack - A panic attack appearing suddenly with no apparent trigger.

Pediatric RN - A registered nurse specializing in the care of children.

Pharmacotherapy - Treatment of disease through the use of drugs.

Phenelzine - (Nardil) A drug from the MAOI family.

Phobia - A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.

Placebo - Any dummy medical treatment, originally, a medicinal preparation having no specific pharmacological activity against the patients illness or complaint given solely for the psychophysiological effects of the treatment, more recently, a dummy treatment administered to the control group in a controlled clinical trial in order that the specific and nonspecific effects of the experimental treatment can be distinguished i.e., the experimental treatment must produce better results than the placebo in order to be considered effective.

Placebo Effect - The phenomenon of seeing an improvement while taking a placebo.

Post-partum Depression - A depressive episode following childbirth, usually due to physical and hormonal changes.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - The development of symptoms, following a psychologically stressful event, such as avoidance of the environment intrusive recollections and hyper arousal.

Premenstrual Syndrome - (women, abbr. PMS) Hormonal phenomenon occurring a few days before menstruation, sometimes causing depression and anxiety.

Psychodynamic Theory - The psychodynamic theory of psychology sees anxiety as an alerting mechanism that arises when our unconscious motivations clash with the constraints of our conscious mind.

Psychosis - An extreme derangement of the mind, due to mental illness, with total loss of judgment, memory and insight. It may be a temporary, intermittent or permanent condition.

Psychotherapy - A general term used to describe a form of treatment based on talking with a therapist. Psychotherapy aims to relieve distress by discussing and expressing feelings, to help you change your attitudes, behaviour and habits, and to develop better ways of coping.

Pyrophobia - Fear of fire.

Remeron - An antidepressant (generic name: mirtazapine).

Restless legs syndrome - A distressing movement disorder that causes uneasiness or twitching in the legs after going to bed. People with restless legs syndrome have relatively high levels of anxiety and depression.

SAD - (abbr.) Seasonal Affective Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder.

Seasonal Affective Disorder - A form of depression occurring at certain seasons of the year, especially when the individual has less exposure to sunlight.

Selective Mutism - A consistent failure to speak in specific social situations in which there is an expectation for speaking.

Separation Anxiety Disorder - (children) Excessive anxiety concerning separation from home or from those to whom the child is attached.

Serotonin - A neurotransmitter and hormone. Deficiency of serotonin in the brain is theorized to cause symptoms of depressed mood, anxiety, panic or obsessions and compulsions.

Social Anxiety Disorder - An intense fear of social situations. The fear arises when the individual believes that he or she may be judged, scrutinized or humiliated by others. The anxiety can be specific to one social situation or can be more general in nature.

Social Phobia - (see Social Anxiety Disorder).

SSRI - (abbr.) Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. A class of antidepressant medications.

TFT - (abbr.) Thought Field Therapy. (Also called Callahan Techniques). An alternative and currently non-validated psychotherapy treatment. The procedure is claimed to work by tapping various parts of the body in order to rebalance its natural energy system.

Tourette's Syndrome - A neurological disorder characterized by involuntary muscular movements, uncontrollable vocal sounds, and inappropriate words.

Tranylcypromine - (brand name Parnate) An antidepressant medication, member of the MAOI family.

Tricyclic Antidepressants - (commonly called TCAs). Old class of drugs prescribed for depression disorder. (e.g. imipramine (Tofranil), amitriptyline (Elavil) and nortriptyline (Pamelor)).

Trypanophobia - (Also see needlephobia, belonephobia). Fear of injections.

Venlafaxine - (brand name Effexor) An antidepressant medication, member of the SNRI family. Used to treat depression disorders, anxiety disorders, and adult attention deficit disorder.

VNS - (abbr.) Vagus Nerve Stimulation - a device similar to a pacemaker, shown useful at reducing depression.

Xanax - See alprazolam.

Xenophobia - A person unduly fearful or contemptuous of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or foreign peoples.
