Obsessive compulsive disorder - how to fight it?
Have you ever come back home, just after leaving it, to make sure you have closed doors and windows? Have you repeatedly made sure that everything is in place before going to sleep? If so, you probably have obsessive-compulsive disorder, also known as the manic-compulsive syndrome.What exactly is it?
According to some studies, people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder are struggling with constantly repeating unwanted thoughts, images or impulses that appear in human consciousness. More and more often, there are excessive concerns related to everyday problems that try to suppress or ignore. Being aware that they are produced by their mind, they try to neutralize them through other behaviours. People who may be susceptible to this type of disease have such features as: Pedantry; Absolute observance of regulations and rules; Detailed analysis of the situation; Perfectionism; Nerves most often appear between 7 and 13 years of age or 20 and 25. Among children, it is most common in boys, while in adults - in women. Obsessive thoughts can be associated with a recurring day. They return constantly, forcing us to relive again what we would not like to remember. Very often they cause feelings of guilt, doubt, fears, sleep disorders, aggression and depression. In addition to mental states, there are also somatic symptoms - sweating, palpitations or even problems with the digestive system. These thoughts are usually meaningless and blasphemous. They may involve harming loved ones, sexual obsessions or constant thinking about past mistakes.
Compulsions - or intrusive activities The reaction to all these constant thoughts are compulsions. Routine behaviours that we perform to neutralize and protect ourselves from imaginations. They often take a lot of time, disrupt the harmony of everyday life and discourage third parties from us. The most common of these are: Washing hands and body several times; Arranging objects in terms of symmetry; Very frequent checking: did we close the door, turn off the water, put the toilet seat down, turn off the light, etc.; Cleaning clothes and equipment; Counting corners in rooms, road signs, columns; Pulling hair from the head; PhobiasWe are very often aware of the absurdity of activities that we perform through the illness, however, the thought often arises in our head: "I know it is stupid and does not make sense, but I will check and I will have peace." Attempts to stop such activities in most cases end in failure and exacerbate the internal tension, which we only discharge by performing the given activity. Often people suffering from this ailment try to control the environment and hide the fact that something is wrong with them. A vicious circle and what next?
Coping with manic-compulsive disorder can occur in two ways. We can offer a person pharmacological therapy. We then assign medicine with proven high efficiency, as much as 70-80%. These are drugs mainly from inhibitors and act symptomatically. They are usually used for approximately 6 months. Sometimes improvement can be seen already in the 3rd or 4th week. After withdrawing the medicine, in most cases our disease returns, so the second form of treatment is very often also recommended.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy. It consists in making the patient aware that you do not have to be so much in control, and omitting any compulsions will not cause any catastrophe. Thanks to that we are able to mute certain activities and understand that certain abandonment of a given activity will not result in any consequences. The use of both methods gives us a better chance of breaking out of this vicious cycle of obsessions.
Failure to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder may result in worsening of symptoms, suicidal thoughts and depression, as a result of which our health may be significantly impaired. Do not wait until the situation gets bad, and obsessions will increase. It is not a shame - for a happier life.
