I've been taking it for a year.  No-one is monitering it so the info that it can cause tumours in blood vessels and the fact that i am suffering chronic vasculitis worries me, I could be at risk.  Recently, I ran out of this drug and the GP was slow to get a repeat prescription done leaving me without it for 3 days.  I experienced really bad withdrawal effects of sweating, return of my original neuropathic pain tenfold,anxiety and depression and an inability to hold my head up I was so exhausted. These symptoms completely disappeared 24 hrs after returning to pregabelin. Also if this drug is a 'narcotic' it worries me that I am taking Fentanyl at the same time.  However, without this drug I cannot use my hands or walk very far due to the pain so it has given me a life back.  I don't want to think it could be dangerous to take this for the rest of my life.   (Tue May 16 7:16 2006)

I would like to see the information that one dose of pregabalin was given to drug abusers and they said, 'they like it'.  I am not finding many good resources for the reasoning as to why pregabalin was made a schedule V.  It is related to neurontin.  I've heard that the reason was because it could cause physiological dependence (nothing about 'abuse' potential).  There are MANY drugs that cause physiological dependence that are NOT scheduled drugs.  Neurontin would be ONE of them.  Clonidine is another (rebound hypertension when you abruptly stop it, etc.).  So I'm not buying that explanation from the FDA.  

I am wondering if there is a relationship of pregabalin to 'date-rape' drugs like GHB or Rohypnol.  If so, and if given as a 'micky' in an alcoholic beverage, then perhaps that might be the real issue?

Pregabalin is not a narcotic.  It is a Schedule V non-narcotic Controlled Substance, the least restrictive category.  In clinical trials, when habitual drug abusers were given one dose of 450 mg of pregabalin, they said they "liked" it so the FDA placed it in this category.  These drug abusers were not the same patients who were being treated  neuropathy or epileptic seizures in clinical trials.  A dose of 450 mg would put most people to sleep.  In clinical trials, patients were given 150 to 600 mg per day in 2 or 3 divided doses.
That explains why your doctor used a blue pad to write the Rx for pregabalin.

Under the influence of GABA the neurons slow down or stop working. This means that GABA has a general soothing or calming influence on the brain: it is in some ways the body's natural hypnotic and tranquillizer. This natural action of GABA is augmented by benzodiazepine, which thus exert an extra (often excessive) inhibitory influence on neurons for general calming and quieting effect on the brain.
Alprazolam enhances the activity of GABA but not increase the nervous system's biological synthesis of GABA. Generic Xanax is more than 80% protein bound and is absorbed by the human system. Its benzodiazepine based metabolites are excreted primarily in urine and supported by sweating, saliva, faeces and breast milk.
Alprazolam acts as an anti-depressant in the human nervous system by controlling anxiety attacks and panic disorders. It operates widely in the brain, reducing emotional reactions, fear, tension, memory, thinking, control of consciousness, muscle tone and coordination within nervous system.
